In this period, there are many events and fairs to be held in Milan and its hinterland and among these we would like to recommend the EICMA, the International Bicycle, Motorcycle and Accessory Exhibition, which will be held in the Fiera Milano spaces in Rho between 7 and 12 November.
This is a world-class trade fair, which has been attracting thousands of motor enthusiasts every year for more than a century. It is certainly a more unique than rare opportunity to admire the latest innovations in the sector and come into contact with the most important exhibitors, learning their stories.
In addition to the exhibitors, you can enjoy a packed calendar of exhibitions, races and shows full of adrenaline, with many famous guests from the world of motorcycling and beyond: it will be a whole week of excitement, discovery and passion for two-wheel enthusiasts and non-fans alike.
History of the EICMA
Birth and early years
The origins of the event go back to the very first years of the 20th century, more precisely to 1901: the International Automobile and Cycle Exhibition was held in Milan for almost the entire month of May, attracting a large number of visitors.
In the wake of this, in 1914 the actual exhibition was launched at the Kursaal Diana hotel. Around 24 exhibitors took part in the event, but the events of the First World War marked a 6-year setback: in fact, the second edition was held in 1920, in the premises of Veloce Club Milano.
The 1920s saw a further change: from 1925, the Exhibition moved to the Palazzo della Permanente and a few years later, at the end of the 1930s, to the Palazzo dell'Arte; the Exhibition remained there even after the end of the Second World War - which interrupted the holding of the fair for five years.
The second post-war period
The evolution from the early years to the industrial boom after World War II meant that the bicycle and motorbike sectors were also involved in this strong expansion.
For this reason, a new - and this time definitive - change of venue was necessary: in 1952, the EICMA moved to the Palazzo della Meccanica, within the spaces of Fiera Milano, which were much larger than the previous venue.
The advent of the small cars during the 1950s, however, decisively changed the fate of the sector: the launch of the Fiat 500 and 600 models triggered a major crisis in the sale of cycles and motorbikes, so the EICMA was organised every two years, from 1957 for the next 40 years.
The 2000s
When the new exhibition space in the Rho-Pero hub was created in 2005, EICMA moved and resumed its traditional organisation, i.e. on an annual basis, dedicating two special sessions to bikes and motorbikes (this subdivision was experimented in the 1995 edition).
The inheritance collected in previous years has ensured that in recent years the Show has been able to boast a very large number of exhibitors: suffice it to say that in the 2007 edition there were 1,515 exhibitors from 39 different countries, while in the 2009 edition there were about 450,000 visitors in total, including about 50,000 trade operators.
These high numbers allowed the two sectoral exhibitions to be merged into a single show, thus returning to the splendour of the past.
Last but not least, the achievement of ISO 20121 certification for the 2019 and 2021 editions, an internationally recognised standard for sustainable event management and organisation.
The importance of EICMA
Today, EICMA represents a showcase of international standing: thanks to careful and laborious construction over the decades, it has succeeded in concentrating within it the prestige and experience of many realities, large and small, which through press conferences, workshops, presentation of new models and much more, have succeeded in further affirming themselves and relaunching the image of the exhibition itself in Italy and worldwide.
To further emphasise the relevance of the event, it should be remembered that there are several well-known manufacturers that have presented their most important and new models of bikes and motorbikes in the exhibition's more than 100 years of history, including the Italian Guzzi, Gilera, Piaggio, Ducati and Aprilia, as well as world-famous brands such as BMW, Aston Martin, Kawasaki, Honda and Yamaha.
Another important aspect is the presence during the various events of riders, testimonials of the aforementioned motorbike brands, and who have made history in two-wheel sport: Valentino Rossi, Max Biaggi, the current MotoGP world champion Pecco Bagnaia, and many other illustrious names, to the delight of many motorbike enthusiasts.
