Lake Maggiore, things to see
Lake Maggiore is the second Italian lake, only Lake Garda has a greater area. It always deserves a visit and it is even better if you can spend a whole weekend there, always with Vip Limousine’s personal driver.
Lake Maggiore, what do you have to see? We wish to provide you several tips.
Stresa
Stresa is a little town considered by everyone the queen of Lake Maggiore. Even if it counts only 5000 residents, Stresa is full of gardens, ancient nobiliary palaces, flowers and a long waterfront walk. The shore of Stresa is the perfect location to admire the lake and, above all, the famous Borromean Islands.
The most peculiar thing of Stresa is its location. This Italian comune is divided in 3 different areas: one is located on the shores of Lake Maggiore, the second is close the hills and the last one is located on the mountains.
Stresa is famous not only for its natural and architectonical beauties, but also for the events that, every year, take place in the city. For sure the most important event is the Stresa Festival, an important musica festival, but there are also the Premio Stresa di Narrativa and the Premio Giallostresa, two competitions related to books and narrative.
Isola Bella - Borromean Islands
If you visit for the very first time Lake Maggiore, you must go to Isola Bella one of the Borromean Islands. This is the most fascinating island of the lake. There is also an ancient Borromean residence.
Visiting Isola Bella, you will admire the botanic garden, the Borromean Palace and elegant Italian style garden rising in different terraces. Here you will find exotic and uncommon plants.
Isola Madre - Borromean Islands
Isola Madre belongs to Borromean family as well and it deserves to be visited like Isola Bella. Isola Madre is the biggest island among the Borromean Islands.
Exactly like Isola Bella, even Isola Madre hosts a Borromean Palace, another ancient property of the Italian nobile family, built in 1500 and opened to the public only in the 1978.
On this island you can visit the family chapel, a fantastic English style garden and, inside the palace, there is a large collection of porcelain dolls and an exposition of stage scenery for puppet shows.
Garden of Villa Taranto
Located on the western shore of Lake Maggiore, Villa Taranto is an ancient noble palace now used as an Italian prefecture. As soon as you arrive there, your attention is not attracted by the palace but by the magnificent garden that surround the house.
It is not a case if a lot of people consider the garden of Villa Taranto one of the most beautiful of the world. In this garden you can admire more than 1000 exotic plants of inestimable value. Spring and summer are the best seasons to admire the whole garden: when the plants are luxuriant and in bloom, this english garden shines like few others in the world.
Hermitage of St. Catherine - Eremo di Santa Caterina del Sasso
The Hermitage of St. Catherine is an ancient monastery with a very particular location. It was built in a narrow terrace in the steep cliff upon Lake Maggiore.
The hermitage was founded in the XIII Century. A merchant took refuge in a cave during a terrible storm: that cave is still located where there is the hermitage. After the storm he made an oath: to build a hermitage to St. Catherine. Few years later, he built a tiny church.
A century later, the Augustinian monks decided to build a monastery close to that tiny church.
Even if you can reach the Hermitage of St. Catherine by boat, you can also use your luxury car with driver. Vip Limousine’s driver will take you to discover this magical and evocative place.
Villa Pallavicino
If you are in love with animals, you have to visit Villa Pallavicino located not very far from Stresa.
This neoclassical house was built in the mid-1800s by the Genoese family Pallavicino and it was used as a family estate. The descendants of this family decided to transform the entire estate in a faunistic garden, full of animals in the wild. Few years later, the zoological garden was inaugurated with the presence of animals from all over the globe.
A stop in this huge park is a must, in this way you can also admire the Borromean Islands that rise in front of the palace.
