The history of Monaco

Monaco became the property of the Genoese Grimaldi family in 1297, the year Monaco became independent from the neighboring Republic of Genoa. It all began at the court of Versailles in the second half of the 18th century, where two Italian ladies gained fame for their extraordinary beauty. They were the marquise Maria Anna Balbi di Groppoli and her charming daughter Maria Caterina Brignole Sale.

The marquise was a shrewd politician and convinced her ambassador husband, along with her friend Madame de Pompadour, to give up their only daughter Maria Caterina to the Prince of Monaco. The marriage would bring political, economic and prestige benefits to both families.

In 1757, a series of ships departed from Genoa escorting the future princess to Monaco. Once they reached Monegasque waters an additional problem arose. Honoré III, the prince, refused to go to meet the bride on the ship he was on, by virtue of his title as reigning sovereign; at the same time, the Genoese refused to go along with the prince's wishes, since Mary Catherine, being the niece of two doges, was equated with a princess. Because of the standoff, the young woman remained on board the ship for several days until a compromise was reached: the two spouses met halfway on the pier.

Despite these mishaps, the couple was married on June 5, 1757, and Maria Caterina Brignole Sale of Genoa became princess consort of Monaco.

Since then, the Grimaldi family has ruled the Principality of Monaco, ferrying it through no small number of pitfalls until it became what it is today, a place where luxury, nobility, history and natural beauty come together to bring life like a modern fairy tale.
