In 1630, during the plague, rumors began to circulate that Acerbi was immune to it. In fact, although one-tenth of the population died due to the disease, Ludovico continued to live a normal and unrestricted life.

The most disturbing aspect of the story is precisely this. Mundane parties within his palace occurred in large numbers despite the context, but neither he nor any of his guests were ever infected.

The events led people of the time to believe that the house was inhabited by the devil himself. Rumor that was also corroborated by the bizarre behaviors of its owner. For example, he used to move around the city in the night with a carriage drawn by black horses, perhaps with the purpose of putting fear into the citizens.

The gates of hell
