Tour of the castles in Valle d'Aosta: Castello di Fènis

Sometimes our tour starts from the most famous castle in Val D’Aosta, the symbol of this region’s feudalism and Middle Ages, which is Castello di Fénis: an excellent example of military architecture from the 14th century.

Despite its austere and without any frills external appearance, its interior is rich of extremely elegant details, as its residents represented the élite of Val d'Aosta in that period.

The Castello di Fènis attracts an endless crowd of tourists, and also cinema demonstrates a continuous interest for this authentic jewel of Medieval architecture.

In fact here were shot the films "Fracchia contro Dracula" (Neri Parenti, 1985) and the TV miniseries "La Freccia Nera" (Fabrizio Costa, 2006).
In 1976 the beauty of Castello di Fénis was impressed on the stamp of 150 liras issued by Poste Italiane.

Tour of the castles in Valle d'Aosta: Castello di Issogne

The second marvellous construction where we’re going to bring you is Castello di Issogne, famous mostly for its fountain of the pomegranate, that can be visited in the wide courtyard.

Grim and quite anonymous outside, this castle has a remarkable architectural preciousness inside: in the magnificence of its rooms and halls.

The quadrangular plan of the building is closed on 3 sides and the fourth is composed by the garden, delimited on the outside by a simple surrounding wall.

At the centre of the courtyard, on the octagonal fountain, you can see a wrought iron pomegranate tree – a symbol of prosperity, while walking around in the half-light of the portico, you can admire on the walls the frescos of wise men and heroes, the Challant emblems and also scenes of daily life in the village.

Tour of the castles in Valle d'Aosta: Castello di Verrès

In the south of Val d'Aosta, in a place anciently called Vitricium, raises the important Castello di Verrès, one of the most enduring castles of the region. Castello di Verrès will surely leave you breathless as soon as you see it for its massiveness: it’s a real mirror of the greatness and magnificence of that times.

An inscription carved above a door, introducing from the perron to the first floor, reveals that the first stone was laid in 1390.

Every year the Historical Carnival recalls Caterina di Challant’s history, who took shelter here during civil strife and in 1449, on the day of the celebration of the Holy Trinity, came to Verrès with her consort to dance with the young people and to ingratiate herself with the village.

Tour of the castles in Valle d'Aosta: Castello di Ussel

Going forward on our tour, we’ll find Castello di Ussel on an imposing promontory, dominating all the village of Châtillon: built anew around 1343 overhanging the plain Châtillon, it has a massive form allowing it to face the centuries without suffering important transformations.

Baron Marcel Bich, the inventor of the ballpoint pen, donated it to the Regione della Valle d'Aosta making sure that it would be destined to the public (since 1998 it’s open from May to October).
Inside you can see endured the beautiful monumental fireplaces and the blind arches carved in stone.

Tour of the castles in Valle d'Aosta: Forte di Bard

Also the Forte di Bard is wonderful and not to be missed, obligatory stop-over of our tour with Vip Limousine luxury car rental with driver: a fortress anciently impregnable that in the 19th century represented the undisputed symbol of security.

Today it still represents one of the best examples of blockhouse, having remained almost intact since then.

The fortress is composed of 3 main buildings, inside of which are present various exhibitions of Forte di Bard: starting from the bottom you’ll find the Opera Ferdinando, where are hosted Museo del Forte and Museo delle Frontiere, and the Opera Mortai.

The central building is composed of the Opera Vittorio, which hosts the space Alpi dei Ragazzi. On the top of the rock are raising the Opera di Gola and the most majestic of the works: the Opera Carlo Alberto.

Inside it you can see Piazza d’Armi surrounded by a wide portico and the areas dedicated to the temporary exhibitions. At the first floor is situated the Museo delle Alpi, and in the basements the Prigioni (prisons), hosting a multimedia thematic itinerary about the history of the Forte di Bard.

Today is possible to reach the top of the fortress following the walkway, but also through the panoramic elevators that make you enjoy a wonderful view on the surrounding valley.

Don’t forget that Forte di Bard hosted some important external scenes of the film Avengers: Age of Ultron, so much so that inside the Forte you’ll find some life-sized statues of the super heroes of the film, as an enormous green Hulk.

At the foot of the Forte there is the village of Bard: we’ll get there to go around the roads of the suggestive village, always full of tourist thanks to its historical value and extraordinary beauty of a village unaltered over time: characteristics thanks to which was listed among the 20 most beautiful villages of Italy.

Tour of the castles in Valle d'Aosta: Castel Savoia

From the so-called “Belvedere”, the place on the foot of the Colle della Ranzola, Castel Savoia dominates the valley of Gressoney, Queen Margherita’s beloved holiday destination.

This eclectic style castle certainly deserves a visit – it was designed by the architect Stramucci, the same of the Neo Baroque decorations of Palazzo Reale in Tourin and of the Quirinale in Rome.

Castel Savoia is composed of a central rectangular nucleus, flanked by 5 pointed towers, giving to it a magical and fairy aspect.

If the exterior is covered with grey flagstones coming from the local caves, the interior is royally decorated with ornamental paintings and wainscotings, as a vivid background for the Medieval inspired furniture.

Everywhere you can see recalls to the daisy flower (margherita), referring to the name of the queen, whom initials are often recognised in the dwelling, as the many ornamental frames showing the mottos of the House Savoia.

Tour of the castles in Valle d'Aosta: Castello Sarriod de La Tour

The last stop-over of our tour in a luxury car with driver is probably the Castello Sarriod de La Tour: it’s a typical manor house of Val D’Aosta, resulting as an irregular set of buildings surrounded by the town walls, and extending on a beautiful valley near the Dora Baltea.

It belonged to the Sarriod family until 1922 when, at the death of the last descendant, it passed first to the senator Bensa di Genova, and in the end to the municipality in 1970.

The pearl of the Castle is definitely the curious Sala delle teste (Hall of the heads), so called for the decorations on the wooden ceiling: noblewomen with fashion headgear and noblemen with various styles of hats, that are alternating with musicians, jesters, fantastic creatures, animals and beasts.

Also the Chapel must be admired, whose frescos from the 14th century were discovered thanks to the restorations in 1978.
